Women at Coda Payments - Kobe Fung

In this month's Women at Coda Payments, Kobe, Coda's Director of Product Operations, shares about how she manages her work and family life, and why her family and friends are her biggest source of motivation.

Describe your role as the Director of Product Operations, what do you do in your day-to-day work life?

On a typical day, I never know what’s going to happen! At all times, we have numerous projects at different phases, and I’m helping to guide all of them. There are days I talk with the product team to gain additional insights about the new products and plans. On other days, I would work closely with my team on upcoming new features and rollout plans.

I also spend time observing the team and coordinating them to work together, coaching each member to realise their strengths so the team is one powerful unit #strongertogether.

What do you think enabled your career success, especially in a male-dominated field?

To be constantly learning! Always maintain a humble attitude and know that it’s impossible to know everything; there’s always more to learn and discover. I always remind myself to stay thirsty for new knowledge and to get out of my comfort zone to explore new things.

How can women succeed in both the workplace and home environment?

Learn how to juggle work and family in a way that suits you! For me, I prefer some flexibility in my work schedule to allow me to tend to my family's needs. I also communicate with my family about my workload and discuss how to split household responsibilities. That way, I am able to segregate my time wisely between work and family.

How do you bounce back after making a mistake?

Own it. Fix it. Learn from it.

Taking ownership helps me to build back my confidence and trust in others. It’s all about accepting the fault and fixing it. If needed, I will seek help from others to fix the problem and then learn from the mistake and experience. I would also set aside time to write down what I've learned. These learning points have helped me improve myself and to not make the same mistake again.

It's okay to make mistakes, but do not beat yourself up about them!

Where do you draw motivation from?

I draw strength and motivation from my very positive friends and supportive family! They are an essential part of my life. Whenever I face difficulties or feel burnt out, they always offer me advice and encouragement. I would always feel inspired, motivated and recharged from that positive energy.

Any advice that can help women achieve the success they want in their workplaces, especially in male-dominated roles or industries?

Constantly improve yourself and recognise your value! Do not overlook soft skills such as communication, attention to detail, and a strong sense of awareness. These skills could be very advantageous for your career progression.
